‘Reasons for cancellation of nominations of candidates should be given within 48 hours’, High Court orders Punjab Election Commission

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued strict orders to the Election Commission of Punjab regarding the cancellation of nominations for the municipal elections.

The High Court has ordered the Election Commission to pass a speaking order within 48 hours stating the reasons for the cancellation of the nominations of all the candidates of the corporation and council.

The High Court has also ordered that the final list of candidates whose nomination papers have been accepted should be uploaded by late night today along with complete information.

The High Court has issued this order to the Punjab State Election Commission while disposing of a petition filed regarding these elections.

In the petition filed regarding these demands, Advocate Paramveer Singh Sunny told the High Court that the Commission is not giving any information about the grounds on which the nominations have been cancelled.

Nominations are being cancelled without giving any reason, and even for the candidates whose nomination papers have been accepted, no information about the final list is being uploaded. Nor is the information given in their nomination papers being made public through nominations.

This petition was filed regarding these demands, and the High Court has now issued this order to the Punjab State Election Commission.
