Delhi M.Phil Degree Holder Arrested for Jewellery Shop Robbery

New Delhi: Delhi Police have arrested a 32-year-old M.Phil degree holder, who was also a proclaimed offender, in connection with a jewellery shop robbery in the national capital, officials said on Sunday.

The accused has been identified as Deep Shubham, a native of Chorout village in Bihar’s Sitamarhi district, DCP (Crime) Harsh Indoora said in a statement.

Acting on specific inputs that Shubham would visit the Hari Nagar area, a team from the Crime Branch mounted technical surveillance and laid a trap. The accused was subsequently nabbed without incident.

Highly Educated — From DU to a Life of Crime

According to police, Shubham had an impressive academic background. Raised by his grandmother, he moved to Delhi in 2009 and graduated with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Chemistry from Kirori Mal College, followed by M.Sc. and M.Phil in Chemistry from Delhi University.

He later cleared CLAT and enrolled for LLB at Damodaram Sanjeevaya National Law University in Visakhapatnam but dropped out after a year. Returning to Delhi, he pursued an M.A. in English at Kirori Mal College and worked at a Genpact call centre for two years.

However, police said his financial struggles and lack of family support eventually pushed him into criminal activity.

From Chemistry to Crime: Bank Robbery with Homemade Smoke Bombs

In 2017, Shubham robbed a Bank of India branch in Bihar’s Sitamarhi by setting off a smoke bomb made with firecrackers, methyl acetate, and benzine.

He was arrested by Bihar Police from Burari and later sent to Sitamarhi jail, where he met another criminal, Ritesh Thakur. After his release, the duo regrouped in Delhi and committed multiple armed robberies in Model Town.

Series of Robberies and Arrests

After being released on bail, Shubham absconded and frequently changed his location to evade arrest. He was recently employed as an interior designer with Glossy Gaze, a firm in Sohna, Haryana.

Police said he has two robbery cases registered at Model Town Police Station.

• On September 17, 2021, he allegedly robbed a shop at gunpoint, escaping with ₹6.06 lakh and the victims’ phones after locking them inside.

• On October 25, 2021, he targeted a jewellery shop, threatening the guard and the shop owner at gunpoint. Out of fear, the complainant handed over ₹70,000, following which Shubham fled.

Police said further investigation is ongoing to trace his accomplices, recover the weapons, and determine whether he was involved in other unsolved robberies in Delhi-NCR.
