Supreme Court to Hear Delhi-NCR Pollution, Stubble Burning and Green Crackers Issues Today

New Delhi: The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear matters related to rising air pollution in Delhi-NCR, stubble burning and the sale of green firecrackers on Thursday, ahead of the Diwali festival.

The hearing comes as concerns grow over deteriorating air quality in the national capital and surrounding areas. The court is expected to consider issues related to firecracker manufacturing and use, along with other measures to control pollution during the festive season.

Supreme Court’s Firecracker Ban Under Review

Under an earlier order aimed at tackling air pollution in Delhi-NCR, the Supreme Court had imposed a complete ban on the manufacturing, storage and use of all types of firecrackers.

However, during the previous hearing, the court indicated the possibility of a limited relaxation. It allowed manufacturers to produce green firecrackers for the Delhi-NCR region, while making it clear that permission to manufacture them would not automatically allow their sale.

The distinction between manufacturing and selling green firecrackers is expected to remain a key issue in Thursday’s proceedings. The court’s consideration comes as authorities prepare for Diwali, when firecracker use can add to the region’s pollution levels.

Centre Asked to Work on Balanced Firecracker Policy

The Supreme Court had also directed the Central Government to consult all relevant stakeholders and work towards a balanced policy on the manufacturing and use of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR.

The aim is to address pollution concerns while considering how restrictions can be implemented effectively. The question of whether green firecrackers should be permitted for sale remains important in this process.

Court Stresses Public Awareness to Curb Pollution

In an earlier hearing, the apex court observed that public awareness and voluntary participation could be more effective in tackling firecracker-related pollution than restrictive orders that may be difficult to enforce on the ground.

With air quality a major concern ahead of Diwali, Thursday’s hearing is expected to bring further attention to the measures needed to reduce pollution across Delhi-NCR. The matters before the court also include stubble burning, another issue associated with seasonal air pollution in the region.
