MK Stalin Extends Support to CJP as DMK Explores Possibility of Third Front

Chennai: DMK president M.K. Stalin’s public support for the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has sparked speculation about a possible political understanding between the two parties as the DMK explores the prospect of a third front at the national level. However, no alliance or agreement between the DMK and CJP has been announced.

Stalin condemned the arrests of CJP functionaries Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka in Delhi and offered the DMK’s support, including legal assistance. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke subsequently thanked the DMK leader for his gesture.

The development comes amid reported efforts by the DMK to explore political options outside the BJP-led and Congress-led alliances following its defeat in the Tamil Nadu Assembly election.

DMK Looks Beyond Existing Political Alliances

The DMK had contested the previous Lok Sabha and Tamil Nadu Assembly elections as part of the Congress-led INDIA bloc. However, the political landscape changed after the Assembly election, when the Congress joined the victorious TVK-led coalition and secured two ministerial positions, dealing a setback to its former ally.

With the AIADMK aligned with the BJP and the TVK associated with the Congress-led bloc, the DMK faces a more complicated choice in positioning itself within the existing political formations.

Against this backdrop, the party has reportedly explored the possibility of bringing together parties outside the two principal national alliances.

DMK deputy general secretary Kanimozhi had earlier met Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee, Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray amid discussions about a possible third front. However, those contacts have yet to result in a formal arrangement.

Stalin Condemns Arrests of CJP Functionaries

Stalin’s latest intervention followed protests in Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Delhi Police arrested CJP functionaries Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka for allegedly entering the Jantar Mantar area without authorisation.

Questioning the BJP government’s response to the demonstrations, Stalin asked how many protesters could be arrested and how many young voices could be suppressed.

He said the DMK would stand by the arrested CJP functionaries and was prepared to provide all necessary legal assistance.

Stalin also argued that jailing more young people would only fuel further opposition. He said ordinary citizens without political affiliations could also take to the streets.

Third Front Remains at Exploratory Stage

Stalin’s statement signals solidarity with the CJP functionaries, but it remains unclear whether the outreach will lead to a broader political understanding between the two parties.

The DMK’s reported contacts with leaders outside the existing national alliances have not yet produced a formal coalition. The proposed third front also lacks a clearly defined structure or common programme at this stage.

For now, the support extended to the CJP comes amid wider political discussions about possible alternatives to the BJP-led and Congress-led blocs, rather than a confirmed alliance.
