Efforts to Stop Child Begging at Intersections

The judiciary has also taken note of the fact that young children begging at intersections across the country tarnish the image of a developing nation. Begging has become a full-fledged business, with mafia groups even getting involved. While men disguised as eunuchs and beggars faking disabilities are commonly seen at intersections, it is a shameful act against humanity that young children are being forced to beg, depriving them of education and other opportunities. Recently, a new version of Project Jeevanjot was launched in Punjab. It was observed that children were being deliberately disabled and forced to beg in Jalandhar, Ludhiana, and Patiala.

Action was taken against those responsible. 35 children were rescued from Patiala, Jalandhar, and Ludhiana. In Patiala alone, 13 children were rescued in two days. The Child Welfare Committee has now become active. According to its orders, all the children have been placed in different children’s homes. To ensure that these children are not being used as tools for begging, the documents of their parents will be verified. A toll-free number, 1098, has been provided for assistance related to children in any emergency. Complaints about this illegal business of begging at intersections are not new.Considering it a lucrative business, idle people are seen staging elaborate acts to beg at intersections. A recent survey revealed that people give the most donations to beggars at intersections. District-level task forces to stop child begging have also been formed. However, the problem is that when criticism mounts, these task forces raid the intersections.
