Election Commission of India imposes strict bike curbs in West Bengal ahead of polls

New Delhi: Ahead of the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India has imposed strict rules regarding two-wheelers. These restrictions came into effect on Tuesday and will remain in effect in all 152 assembly constituencies until the first phase of voting on April 23.

The Commission states that these measures are aimed at preventing any incidents of intimidation and ensuring a peaceful environment during the elections.

Night movement prohibited, rallies banned

According to the new directives, the movement of bikes and scooters will be completely prohibited from 6 pm to 6 am. However, exemptions have been granted for medical emergencies or essential family functions.

Furthermore, bike rallies have been completely banned, as they are considered a means of obstructing and pressuring the electoral process.

Prohibition on pillion riding during the day

Pillion riding will also be prohibited between 6 AM and 6 PM. However, limited exemptions have been granted for essential situations such as medical emergencies, family functions, or dropping off children at school.

On polling day, family members will be allowed to travel as pillion riders from 6 AM to 6 PM, allowing them to easily reach the polling station.

Permission required from police

Those seeking exemption from these rules under special circumstances will need to obtain prior written permission from their nearest police station.

Emphasis on fair elections

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has stated that the Commission will take all necessary steps to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections in West Bengal.

It is worth noting that a dispute is also ongoing between the Trinamool Congress and the Election Commission regarding the special amendment to the voter list. The party has alleged that some voters are being excluded from the list, while the Commission and other parties have rejected these allegations.
