New Delhi: In a significant political decision ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, the Central Government on Wednesday approved the stoppage of the Firozpur-Delhi Vande Bharat Express at Barnala Railway Station. This decision is expected to benefit several districts in the politically sensitive Malwa region.
Good News for passengers in the Malwa region
This new stoppage will directly benefit passengers from Barnala, Mansa, Malerkotla, and Sangrur districts. Barnala is located in the heart of the Malwa region and has high passenger traffic due to its connectivity with several surrounding districts.
Stoppage granted after political pressure
Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu said that the demand for a stoppage at Barnala was raised by leaders from all political parties. Aam Aadmi Party MPs Meet Hayer and Rajendra Gupta and BJP leader Kewal Singh Dhillon consistently pursued the issue.
In a video message shared on Twitter, Bittu said that this decision will boost the economy of Barnala, as well as Mansa, Malerkotla, and Sangrur.
Which stations did it stop at previously
Previously, the Firozpur-Delhi Vande Bharat Express had stops at Faridkot, Bathinda, Dhuri, Patiala, Ambala Cantt, Kurukshetra, and Panipat. Aam Aadmi Party MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, calling Barnala the “hub of Malwa,” had threatened to protest at the railway station if the stoppage was not granted.
