Fire breaks out at Amritsar government hospital; Patients, Staff evacuated

A fire broke out around 7:30 AM today at the Civil Hospital in Amritsar, Punjab. The fire started in a fridge in the blood bank, causing panic as the children’s ward was nearby.

Upon receiving the alert, hospital staff quickly arrived at the scene and broke the glass windows to prevent smoke from accumulating inside.

All the children, approximately 15, were safely shifted to another location. The staff used fire extinguishers to control the blaze.

During this, Civil Surgeon Dr. Dhawan personally thanked employee Manjinder for his efforts in extinguishing the fire.

Dr. Dhawan stated that the fire originated in a fridge in the blood bank, likely due to self-heating. The fire caused minor damage to nearby fridges, and the staff promptly informed everyone upon noticing it.

Dr. Dhawan explained that security guards broke the blood bank’s windows to prevent gas buildup. The staff then arrived, used fire extinguishers to control the fire, and evacuated the nearby children’s ward, safely relocating the children.

Sanitation worker Manjinder Singh said the fire started near a fridge in the blood bank and spread rapidly, endangering the children. The staff worked hard to rescue the patients and control the situation.

Manjinder added that the staff reached the scene within 15 minutes and fought the fire for an hour. They gathered fire extinguishers from all floors and broke windows to put out the fire.

Sanitation worker Vandana said they were on duty downstairs when someone informed them about the fire. They immediately rushed upstairs, worked together, broke windows, and began rescue operation

Staff managed to protect the lower floors completely. It took about two hours to extinguish the fire, with efforts focused on preventing it from spreading further.
