Govt to launch nationwide awareness drive on unclaimed financial assets from October 4: Ministry

New Delhi: The government will launch a three-month nationwide campaign on October 4 to help citizens locate and claim unclaimed financial assets, according to an official statement.

    ‘Your Money, Your Right’ Campaign

The campaign, titled ‘Your Money, Your Right’, is being spearheaded by the Department of Financial Services (DFS), Ministry of Finance, in coordination with the RBI, IRDAI, SEBI, and the Investor Education and Protection Fund Authority.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will inaugurate the programme in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, and it will continue until December 2025.

During the campaign, citizens will receive on-the-spot guidance on how to search for unclaimed assets, update records, and complete claim procedures. Digital tools and step-by-step demonstrations will be provided to simplify the process.

    Types of Unclaimed Assets

The campaign will focus on unclaimed financial assets such as:

    • Bank deposits and inoperative savings/current accounts

    • Term deposits not claimed after maturity

    • Insurance policy claims

    • Dividends, shares, and mutual fund proceeds

These assets often remain unclaimed due to lack of awareness or outdated account information.

    Promoting Awareness and Financial Inclusion

The initiative aims to encourage active citizen participation, raise awareness, and strengthen financial inclusion in households across India. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and FAQs have been prepared by regulators to ensure a simple and transparent process for claiming assets.

    Special Financial Inclusion Exhibition

A financial inclusion exhibition will also be organised, featuring stalls from banks, insurance companies, mutual funds, and pension institutions to educate citizens about tracing and claiming their assets.

    Background on Unclaimed Deposits

Balances in savings and current accounts that remain inactive for ten years, or term deposits not claimed within ten years from maturity, are classified as unclaimed deposits and are transferred by banks to the Depositor Education and Awareness (DEA) fund maintained by the RBI.
