CM Mann’s Wife Gurpreet Kaur Sends Legal Notices to Majithia, Khaira; Seeks Apology Within 24 Hours

Chandigarh: Dr Gurpreet Kaur Mann, wife of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has sent legal notices to Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia and Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira over allegations linked to an alleged ₹5 crore bribery case. She has demanded that both leaders issue an apology within 24 hours, failing which legal action would be initiated against them.

The notices come days after Majithia shared an alleged audio-video recording on social media, claiming that it contained conversations related to a financial transaction involving alleged middlemen and a relative of Dr Gurpreet Kaur.

The allegations stem from claims made by retired Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice Ranjit Singh, who had alleged that Dr Gurpreet Kaur demanded ₹5 crore in connection with a rape case in which Gur Chahal was named as the prime accused, and to help get a case against a businessman quashed. Dr Gurpreet Kaur has denied the allegations.

Gurpreet Kaur demands apology from Majithia, Khaira

According to the legal notices, Dr Gurpreet Kaur has objected to the statements and material circulated by Majithia and Khaira in connection with the allegations.

She has sought an apology from both leaders within 24 hours and warned that failure to comply would lead to further legal proceedings.

Majithia had released an alleged audio-video clip on September 2 and claimed that it showed conversations concerning financial transactions between alleged intermediaries connected with the accused and a relative of Dr Gurpreet Kaur.

Khaira also shared the material on social media and raised questions over the allegations.

Khaira challenges Gurpreet Kaur to file defamation case

Reacting to the legal notice, Sukhpal Singh Khaira said he would not respond to it and instead challenged Dr Gurpreet Kaur to initiate defamation proceedings against him.

Khaira said he was prepared to face whatever legal action was taken against him and questioned the Punjab government over the allegations.

Majithia’s alleged recording and Khaira’s subsequent posts have intensified the political controversy surrounding the ₹5 crore allegations.

What are the ₹5 crore bribery allegations?

The controversy began after retired Justice Ranjit Singh made allegations against Dr Gurpreet Kaur in August. He claimed that she had allegedly demanded ₹5 crore to suppress a rape case and help get a case against a businessman quashed.

Dr Gurpreet Kaur has categorically denied the allegations.

On August 23, she had already sent a legal notice to retired Justice Ranjit Singh, demanding that he withdraw his statements and issue a public apology within 24 hours. The notice also alleged a political motive behind the accusations.

The matter subsequently came before the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) following a complaint by the Legal Rights Observatory. The NHRC sought an action-taken report from the Punjab Chief Secretary and Director General of Police within two weeks.

Majithia’s audio-video clip adds to controversy

On September 2, Majithia shared an alleged audio-video clip and claimed it contained conversations about financial transactions involving alleged middlemen and a relative of Dr Gurpreet Kaur.

He also made allegations concerning alleged special facilities provided to the accused in Patiala Jail and a meeting at the Chief Minister’s residence.

Khaira later shared the material and questioned Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the Punjab DGP over whether action would be taken against Amardeep Grewal, whom he alleged was involved in the demand for ₹5 crore.

The allegations, however, remain disputed, and Dr Gurpreet Kaur has denied the accusations. The legal notices to Majithia and Khaira mark the latest escalation in the ongoing political and legal controversy.
