Punjab Education Minister Harjot Bains Suspends Ludhiana BPEO After Shocking School Inspection

Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains has suspended the Block Primary Education Officer (BPEO) of Machhiwara in Ludhiana district with immediate effect following a surprise inspection at Indira Colony Government Primary School.

During the raid, the minister found that most students were unable to read even simple Punjabi text, raising serious concerns about the quality of primary education.

Conducted a surprise visit to Government Schools in Machhiwara Sahib and reviewed academic standards and overall functioning.

Show-Cause Notices Issued to Teachers

Taking strict action, Bains also issued show-cause notices to three teachers posted at the school for failing to ensure minimum academic standards.

Describing the situation as “extremely worrying,” the minister said that weak foundational learning could negatively impact the future of an entire generation.

“What I saw today is unacceptable. Children are unable to even read their mother tongue. How will they become doctors, engineers, or responsible citizens in the future?” he said.

Discrepancy Between Reports and Ground Reality

During the inspection, Bains reviewed the school’s official academic report, which indicated that all students had performed well. Expressing displeasure, he said there was a stark difference between the records and the actual learning levels.

He warned that manipulation of academic records would be treated as a betrayal of public trust and said the discrepancy would be thoroughly investigated.

Infrastructure Gaps Noted

The minister also observed poor lighting and unclean conditions in some classrooms and ordered immediate improvements in infrastructure and cleanliness.

While teachers cited staff shortages, Bains made it clear that accountability and discipline were non-negotiable.

More Surprise Inspections Planned

Reiterating the state government’s commitment to strengthening the education system, the minister said fresh recruitments and strict monitoring would continue.

He also announced that surprise inspections would be conducted across Punjab to ensure transparency, accountability, and improved learning outcomes in government schools.
