Haryana to Conduct First Fully Digital Census from May 1

Chandigarh: Haryana will begin the first phase of Census 2027, India’s fully digital population count, from May 1 to 30, officials announced.

Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi described the Census as more than a statistical exercise, calling it the foundation for policy decisions, welfare programmes, and infrastructure planning for the next decade.

The conference, attended virtually by Divisional Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners, and Municipal Commissioners, aimed to sensitise administrative heads about procedures, responsibilities, and timelines.

Rastogi stressed that Census data is crucial for evidence-based policymaking, citing the 2011 Census which helped identify districts with adverse child sex ratios, enabling targeted interventions like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao.

    Role of Officials and Technology

Deputy Commissioners and Municipal Commissioners will ensure full coverage, training of enumerators, and adherence to Central government guidelines.

Financial Commissioner Sumita Misra emphasised error-free execution, proper fund usage, and comprehensive staff training.

The first phase – Houselisting and Housing Census – will allow citizens to self-enumerate online from April 16, receiving a unique ID for verification by field staff.

    Scale and Security

    • 50,000 houselisting blocks across rural and urban areas will be covered.

    • Deployment of 50,000 enumerators and 8,000 supervisors.

    • Mobile application for data collection with offline functionality.

    • District-level coordination committees to ensure smooth operations.

    • All personal data will remain strictly confidential.
