Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has directed a thorough safety audit of all rides and equipment at fairs and public events across the state following a tragic accident at the Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Faridabad. The directive comes after a swing ride collapsed at the fair on Saturday, February 7, killing a police inspector and injuring several others. Mr. Saini described the incident as “extremely painful” and stressed that the safety of human life is paramount, issuing instructions for a complete review of technical inspections, fitness certifications and operational arrangements of all amusement rides to prevent recurrence of similar accidents.
The tragic episode unfolded when a giant swing at the Surajkund Mela malfunctioned and collapsed, trapping and injuring visitors. Inspector Jagdish Prasad, who was on duty at the fair, rushed to assist people when the ride became unstable and was fatally injured during rescue efforts. In addition to the swing accident, another incident occurred earlier when a gate near the fairgrounds collapsed, injuring at least two people, including a child. The incidents prompted immediate rescue operations and heightened scrutiny of safety arrangements at the event.
In the wake of the tragedy, Chief Minister Saini announced that officials must ensure strict compliance with safety standards at all fairs and public gatherings. He instructed a comprehensive technical review and audit of ride inspections and operational arrangements to identify lapses in safety protocols and ensure corrective measures are put in place promptly. The audit will cover all existing equipment and structures at similar events, with the aim to reinforce public confidence in safety measures.
The state government has also assured that any negligence will not be tolerated and that authorities are committed to extending full support to the families of victims and the injured. To provide financial relief, Mr. Saini announced that seriously injured persons will be given financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh each, while others will receive compensation according to government rules.
Expressing condolences over the death of Inspector Prasad, who was posted at Chandhut Police Station in Palwal, the Chief Minister announced that the government stands with the bereaved family. In addition to compensation, Mr. Saini assured that a government job will be offered to a member of the deceased officer’s family to secure their financial future.
Officials also provided updates on the injured; of those admitted to Supreme Hospital, four have been discharged and others are under close medical observation. Similarly, patients at BK Civil Hospital have received treatment and been discharged. Government teams are monitoring their progress and ensuring timely care.
Authorities are conducting a probe into both incidents at the Surajkund fair, with FIRs expected to be registered against responsible parties. Meanwhile, while the amusement ride area has been shut for safety checks, the broader mela is expected to continue as scheduled after the review process is complete. Officials have emphasised that visitor safety remains a top priority and that corrective action will be taken wherever lapses are found.
