Heavy Rain Alert Issued for Parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

Tamil Nadu: The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has released a weather advisory predicting heavy rainfall in several districts of Tamil Nadu and the Puducherry region over the coming days.

According to the latest bulletin, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, and Ariyalur, along with Karaikal in Puducherry, are expected to witness heavy showers at isolated locations today. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant as monsoon conditions strengthen.

Rainfall Outlook for the Weekend

The forecast suggests that moderate rain will likely cover most parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on Sunday. Widespread showers are expected to ease the heat but may also cause disruptions in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

On Monday, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam are set to receive heavy rain. These coastal and delta zones, often prone to waterlogging during the northeast monsoon, could see agricultural fields inundated.

Rainfall Expected to Spread to Other Regions Next Week

Looking ahead to September 9, districts such as Nilgiris, Theni, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivaganga, Tiruchirappalli, Salem, and Kallakurichi are forecast to receive heavy showers. In hilly areas like Nilgiris and Coimbatore, the risk of landslides may increase if rains intensify.

On September 10, several northern and central districts — including Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Salem, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, and Villupuram — are expected to see widespread rainfall. Heavy rain is also likely in Puducherry.

Precautionary Measures for Farmers and Local Authorities

Meteorologists have advised farmers, particularly in the Cauvery delta region where paddy is at a critical stage, to take measures to safeguard crops. Local bodies have been instructed to clear stormwater drains and keep relief teams ready to address possible flooding or power outages.

With active monsoon conditions likely to persist for several days, residents are urged to plan travel carefully and stay updated with advisories from the Meteorological Department.
