Shimla, April 10: Bollywood actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has found herself at the centre of a fresh controversy over her claims regarding an electricity bill of Rs. 1 lakh for her residence in Himachal Pradesh, a house she says she doesn’t even live in. Now, the Himachal Pradesh Electricity Board has hit back, accusing her of misinformation and unpaid dues.

♦What Kangana Claimed

At a recent public rally, Kangana lashed out at the Congress-led Himachal Pradesh Government, saying, “This month I received an electricity bill of Rs. 1 lakh for my house where I don’t even live. The state is in the clutches of wolves. We must free it like we did in the Lok Sabha elections.”

She also took a dig at the government over a CID probe into missing samosas at a state function, sarcastically stating: “Their agencies investigate samosas. It’s embarrassing to see what’s happening in Himachal.”

♦What Electricity Board says:

In response Sandeep Kumar, MD of the state Electricity Board, clarified:

  1. The bill was Rs. 90,384, not Rs 1 lakh- And it was for two months, not one.
  2.  Kangana paid late– In this case, MD of Electricity Board Sandeep Kumar said- Kangana’s actual bill was 90 thousand 384 rupees. This is also not for one but for 2 months. Kangana did not pay the bill for January and February. Kangana paid this bill on 28 March. Before this, Kangana also paid the electricity bill of Rs 82,061 for October, November and December last year in January.
  3. Kangana’s electricity consumption is more than 9 thousand units: MD Sandeep Kumar said that the electricity load at Kangana’s house is 94.82 kilowatts, which is 1500% more than a normal house. Regarding Kangana not staying at home, the official said that the monthly electricity consumption is on an average between 5,000 units to 9,000 units.
  4. CM gave up subsidy, MP is taking it: Kangana is also getting subsidy on electricity given by Himachal government as an MP. Kangana got subsidy of Rs 700 per month in the bill of February-March 2025. On the contrary, the Chief Minister, Ministers, MLAs and most of the officers of Himachal have given up subsidy.

♦Political Reactions:

  1. Congress Hits back – Party’s media head Naresh Chauhan accused Kangana of trying to “distract the public” and “avoid MP responsibilities”, adding, “She hasn’t been to Mandi in a long time.”
  2. BJP distances itself – Party spokesperson Ajay Rana said, “It’s Kangana’s personal statement. She received a bill and has paid it – the matter ends there.”

As the war of words escalates, this seemingly routine utility bill has turned into political flashpoint in poll-bound Himachal.
