Hyderabad Cybercrime Police Arrest 59 Fraudsters

Hyderabad: The Cybercrime Police of Hyderabad arrested 59 cyber fraudsters from across India and refunded ₹86.64 lakh to victims during September, officials said on Saturday.

The Cybercrime Police received 320 NCRP (National Cybercrime Reporting Portal) complaints during the month. Of these, 222 FIRs were registered at the Cybercrime Police Station, while 106 FIRs were filed at Zonal Cyber Cells under the Hyderabad City Police.

During special operations, 59 individuals were arrested from eight states. Police said 28 of them were involved in investment frauds, six in digital arrest scams, four in part-time job investment scams, two in matrimonial frauds, four in credit card frauds, and three in movie piracy.

Pan-India Network of Cybercrime

Investigations revealed that the arrested individuals were linked to 257 cases across India, including 74 cases in Telangana, 53 in Maharashtra, 38 in Karnataka, 15 in Gujarat, 12 in Delhi, and nine each in Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

Other cases were traced to Kerala (6), Bihar, Rajasthan, and Haryana (4 each), Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal (3 each), and two each in Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Odisha, Punjab, and Uttarakhand.

Police seized 43 mobile phones, nine cheque books, eight passbooks, 23 ATM/debit cards, four laptops, one fake company stamp, and 21 SIM cards from the accused.

Breakdown of Refunded Amounts

Out of the ₹86.64 lakh refunded,

• ₹58.47 lakh pertained to investment fraud,

• ₹5.21 lakh to OTP fraud,

• ₹13 lakh to impersonation fraud,

• ₹12.43 lakh to trading fraud,

• ₹50,000 to APK fraud,

• ₹2.58 lakh to credit card fraud, and

• ₹3.34 lakh to job fraud.

Movie Piracy Racket Busted

Cybercrime Police also busted a major movie piracy network and arrested five accused from Bihar, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh.

The arrests followed a complaint filed in June by Yarra Manindra Babu, representing the Anti-Video Piracy Cell of the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce (TFCC). He reported that Telugu films “Single” and “Hit” had been pirated and circulated online on their release day.

Tragic ‘Digital Arrest’ Case

In another operation, Cybercrime Police arrested two individuals from Maharashtra involved in a digital arrest scam that led to the death of a retired doctor in Hyderabad.

According to the complaint, the victim, a retired CSRMO from MN Area Hospital, Malakpet, died of cardiac arrest on September 8 after being harassed by fraudsters impersonating officials from the Bangalore Police, Supreme Court, Enforcement Directorate, and RBI.

The accused extorted ₹6.6 lakh from her Union Bank pension account into an ICICI Bank account using fabricated documents and sustained psychological intimidation. Even after her death, the fraudsters continued sending messages and making calls.
