Rs 11.49 Lakh worth illegal cigarettes seized at Amritsar airport; two passengers apprehended

The Customs Department at Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport in Amritsar has seized a large consignment of cigarettes in a recent operation. The action was taken after Customs officials became suspicious of the activities of two passengers who arrived on AirAsia flight AK94 from Kuala Lumpur.

According to reports, Customs officials stopped the two passengers for questioning based on profiling and intelligence information. A thorough search of their luggage revealed a total of 67,600 cigarette sticks. The cigarettes were cleverly concealed in bags and other belongings to evade Customs inspection.

Market Value of the Seized Cigarettes in the Millions

The estimated market value of the seized cigarettes is approximately ₹11.49 lakh (Indian Rupees). Preliminary investigations revealed that the cigarettes were being smuggled into India without paying customs duty, a direct violation of customs laws. The Customs Department immediately seized the entire consignment.

Customs officials stated that both passengers are being interrogated to determine if an organised gang is involved in this smuggling operation. They are also investigating whether similar smuggling attempts have been made in the past.

Officials said that the Customs Department is fully vigilant in preventing illegal smuggling at international airports and that such operations will continue. They warned passengers that strict legal action will be taken against those who violate customs regulations.
