New Delhi, March 19, 2026: India has achieved a major milestone in its power sector, adding a record 520.51 GW (gigawatts) of electricity generation capacity in the current financial year, the government said on Thursday. This is the highest addition ever recorded in a single year and marks a significant expansion of the country’s energy infrastructure.
This new capacity — equivalent to the combined output of hundreds of large power plants — includes contributions from all sources, especially renewable energy such as solar and wind. Officials noted that solar alone accounted for most of this growth, while wind and other clean energy sources also made substantial contributions. As a result of this surge in capacity, the power shortage has fallen sharply to just 0.03 per cent so far in FY26 (up to January 31), down from much higher levels in earlier years. This means that India’s electricity supply is now closely matching demand, helping avoid power cuts even during peak usage periods.
Much of the new power added comes from renewable sources, reflecting India’s push towards cleaner energy. Solar and wind capacity additions have driven this growth, helping lift the overall share of green power in the national grid.
At the same time, the government has been investing in transmission infrastructure, improving the network of high‑capacity lines and substations that move electricity across states. Officials say these upgrades have reduced bottlenecks and made the grid more stable and reliable.
For ordinary consumers and businesses, the expansion in capacity and near‑elimination of power shortages mean more reliable electricity and fewer disruptions. It also reduces dependence on backup diesel generators — saving costs and cutting emissions.
Government statements show that India has also successfully met record peak power demand this year, demonstrating the strength of its electricity system.
Officials say the strong performance this year sets a solid foundation for future growth as the country continues its energy transition and works toward long‑term renewable targets.
