New Delhi, Aug 31: India supplied the maximum amount of diesel to Ukraine in July 2025. Ukraine’s oil market analytics firm Naftorinok has given this information.
This surge in diesel supply has come at a time when the US has imposed a 50% punitive tariff on India for importing Russian oil.
According to Naftorynok, India met 15.5% of Ukraine’s diesel needs this month, up from just 1.9% in July 2024 last year.
In July 2025, India shipped an average of 2,700 tonnes of diesel to Ukraine every day, one of the highest monthly export figures this year.
The most interesting thing here is that for making diesel, India is buying most of the crude oil from Russia which is at war with Ukraine.
That is, on one hand the US is punishing India for buying Russian oil, and on the other hand India’s diesel is supporting Ukraine’s wartime economy. This shows the complexities of global diplomacy and trade.
Trump said- India is funding the war machine
Donald Trump says that countries like India and China are funding Russia’s war machine by buying cheap oil from it. India, on the other hand, says that it is buying oil from Russia because it is cheap and this is providing fuel to Indian consumers at an affordable price.
India will continue to buy oil from Russia
•The Indian government said it will not stop buying oil from Russia. Two government sources told Reuters that these are long-term oil contracts, which cannot be stopped overnight.
•India is the third largest oil importer in the world. Russia is its largest oil supplier, which meets about 35-40% of India’s total oil needs.
•India argues that buying cheap oil from Russia has not only benefited its economy but also helped keep global oil prices stable.
•India’s Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said- India’s move was in line with the US and Europe’s policy. By buying cheap Russian oil, India prevented oil prices from rising.
Penalty imposed on India for Russian oil but not on China
The US tariffs have raised tensions in India-US relations. India says that the US has targeted it. China is Russia’s biggest oil buyer, but no penalty has been imposed on it. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that imposing penalties on China could increase global oil prices.
India’s foreign secretary recently said that talks are going on with the US on trade and energy security. India is also ready to buy American oil, but it is not economically possible for it to completely stop importing oil from Russia.
