Islamabad: Since Wednesday morning, heavy and relentless rainfall has caused widespread urban flooding in parts of Punjab province. Residents living near a river in Rawalpindi, close to Islamabad, have been instructed to evacuate due to a significant rise in water levels.

A spokeswoman for Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority reported that in the past 24 hours, the floods have resulted in 54 deaths and 227 injuries nationwide, with the majority of fatalities occurring in Punjab. As of 8:00 am Thursday, the overall death toll has reached approximately 180, including 70 children, with around 500 people injured since the monsoon began on June 26.

In response, the Rawalpindi government announced a public holiday on Thursday to encourage residents to stay home. The national meteorological department warned that heavy rainfall is expected to continue until Friday.

Authorities advised residents in vulnerable areas to prepare emergency kits containing food, water, and essential medicines to last three to five days in case of an emergency.

In 2022, monsoon flooding submerged about a third of the country, claiming the lives of 1,700 people.
