Dhaka: Bangladesh and Japan have exchanged formal agreements, with Tokyo pledging to provide $1.063 billion to Dhaka for budget support, railway improvements, and grants, according to Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser’s Press Wing. Of this amount, Japan will allocate $418 million as a Development Policy Loan to support Bangladesh’s economic reforms and climate resilience efforts, while 641 million will be lent for upgrading the Joydevpur−Ishwardi railway line. 4.2 million will be given as grants for scholarships.
During an official visit to Japan, Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus met with Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru. Both leaders reaffirmed their shared goal of a free and open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) to promote peace, stability, and prosperity. Yunus expressed appreciation for Japan’s ongoing support for Bangladesh’s sustainable development and highlighted progress in bilateral projects, especially those under the Bay of Bengal Industrial Growth Belt (BIG-B), including the Moheskhali-Matarbari infrastructure initiative, which aims to build a deep-sea port in the strategically important Bay of Bengal.
Furthermore, Bangladesh and Japan signed several MoUs and agreements covering various initiatives such as establishing a One Stop Service system within BIDA, installing prepaid gas meters, developing a factory for battery-operated cycles, launching a pilot project on information security, and land agreements related to the Bangladesh Special Economic Zone (BSEZ) to encourage Japanese investments. Both countries are also in discussions to sign an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) and an agreement on the transfer of defense equipment and technology.
