Karachi [Pakistan]: A large fire erupted at a factory in Karachi’s Landhi Export Processing Zone on Sunday morning, and despite over 35 hours of effort, it has not been fully extinguished, according to Geo News citing official sources. The fire spread rapidly due to chemicals and strong wind conditions, engulfing nearby factories and causing damage to an adjacent clothing warehouse and a plastic manufacturing unit.
Firefighters have made considerable progress, managing to bring the blaze under control to about 70%, but flames are still active in different sections of all three affected factories. Twelve fire brigade vehicles are engaged in the firefighting operations, with ongoing attempts to fully put out the fire, reported Fire Officer Arif Mansoori.
The incident has resulted in one factory being completely destroyed and another heavily damaged, rendering it unsafe. The cause of the fire remains unknown. During firefighting efforts, at least five firefighters were injured and hospitalized, with one in critical condition. A team of around 20 fire tenders is involved in managing the fire.
Rescue officials noted that the fire started in the early hours within the factory and rapidly spread to nearby facilities due to the presence of combustible materials. Last month, a similar blaze at a garment factory near Murtaza Chowrangi in Landhi destroyed inventory worth millions of rupees. Firefighters initially used smoke injectors to ventilate the buildings and remove toxic fumes, and after nearly three hours, they managed to control that fire.
