Militants targeted a passenger train in southwestern Pakistan on Tuesday, resulting in injuries to the train driver and instigating panic among the passengers, as reported by the news agency Reuters.
The Jaffar Express, carrying approximately 400 passengers across nine carriages, was en route from Quetta in Balochistan province to Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa when the attack occurred, according to railway officials. Authorities have not yet disclosed the full extent of the damage or confirmed whether there were additional injuries among the passengers.
The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist militant organization, has claimed responsibility for the attack. In their statement, the BLA also asserted that they had taken hostages from the train, including members of the security forces.
Local media reports indicate that the militant group claimed the deaths of six military personnel during the incident. They further alleged that hundreds of passengers were being held captive.
In a threatening statement, the BLA warned that all hostages would be executed if Pakistan attempted a military rescue operation. Security forces have been deployed to the region, and an investigation into the incident is currently in progress.
