Islamabad [Pakistan]: The opposition alliance, Tehreek Tahaffuz-e-Ain-e-Pakistan, has announced plans to hold a “grand conference” to address the rise in terrorism, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. During a press conference in Islamabad on Friday, opposition leaders criticized the government for failing to tackle the growing security crisis, blaming it on a rigged election and questioning the legitimacy of the current administration.
Mahmood Khan Achakzai, leader of the alliance, stated that the government is incapable of managing the situation and called for an all-parties conference (APC) to build national consensus on the issue. He urged those in power to step down and emphasized the need for a conference involving all stakeholders. Achakzai also claimed that the February 2024 elections were rigged and that the ongoing crisis was a direct result of the government formed after those elections. He insisted that the only solution to the crisis was an APC.
Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, nominal head of PTI, condemned the hijacking of the Jaffar Express on March 11, praising the swift actions of security forces that prevented a disaster similar to the APS attack. He rejected accusations linking PTI to the incident, calling them baseless and fueled by dubious social media posts.
Hamid Raza, chief of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), questioned the responsibility for the state of chaos following the attack, specifically asking if Defense Minister Khawaja Asif was accountable. He emphasized the opposition’s commitment to ensuring the country’s territorial integrity and progress, a vision shared by PTI founder Imran Khan. Raza reiterated the opposition’s determination to organize the “grand conference” to address the ongoing crisis.
PTI leader Asad Qaiser described the Jaffar Express hijacking as a security failure, criticizing the government for not owning up to the issue.
