Iran has sharply criticised the United States, accusing the White House of hypocrisy over Russian oil imports and claiming Washington is now “begging” countries, including India, to buy Russian crude. The remarks were made by Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, who alleged that the US had previously pressured nations to stop purchasing Russian oil but has now changed its stance amid global energy concerns.

The criticism comes at a time when global energy markets are under pressure due to rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and disruptions in oil supply routes.

Iran accuses US of double standards

Araghchi said the US spent months “bullying” countries, including India, to halt purchases of Russian crude following the Russia-Ukraine conflict. However, according to him, Washington is now encouraging the same countries to buy Russian oil to stabilise global markets.

He accused the US of adopting contradictory policies, arguing that the shift exposes inconsistencies in Washington’s foreign policy regarding energy and sanctions.

The remarks come after the United States reportedly allowed a temporary relaxation enabling Indian refiners to purchase certain shipments of Russian crude already in transit.
