Iran’s major attack on Qatar’s Ras Laffan, significant damage caused

The ongoing conflict between Iran and the US-Israel has now entered a very dangerous phase. Iran’s major attack on one of the world’s largest gas plants, Qatar’s Ras Laffan, has sent shockwaves through the global energy market.

The disruption in Qatar Energy’s production following the attack has raised fears of a severe shortage of cooking gas (LPG) and natural gas in countries like India. The missile attack is being seen as a retaliatory action against the recent Israeli attack on Iran’s Pars gas field. Immediately after the Israeli attack, Iran openly warned Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar that their oil and gas plants could be targeted in the coming hours.

Damage and current situation in Qatar

Qatar has confirmed that an Iranian missile attack caused heavy fires and structural damage in parts of the Ras Laffan Industrial City. However, Qatar’s defense systems intercepted some of the missiles, and emergency safety systems averted a much larger and more destructive explosion.

Qatar Energy confirmed on Wednesday that the world’s most important LNG hub had sustained significant damage. However, it is a matter of relief that all employees are safe and no casualties have been reported. Civil defense teams were initially able to bring the fire under control.

Qatar government’s strong response

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the attack, calling it a barbaric act and a clear violation of the country’s sovereignty and national security. The ministry said that Qatar has always called for restraint and the protection of civilians and energy infrastructure, but Iran’s irresponsible behavior is pushing the entire region into a deeper crisis and posing a direct threat to international peace.
