Jammu, Feb 11: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reaffirmed his government’s commitment to fulfilling key welfare promises, announcing that the process to regularize daily wage workers will be initiated this year. The announcement was made during the discussion on the J&K Budget 2026‑27 in the Legislative Assembly.
Replying to the three‑day debate on the budget presented on February 6, the Chief Minister said the proposed budget lays a strong foundation for sustained economic growth, social welfare and inclusive development across the Union Territory. Abdullah, who also holds the finance portfolio, emphasized the government’s focus on improving employment opportunities and public services while ensuring transparent and timely delivery of development benefits.
On the long‑standing issue of daily wage employees many of whom have worked for years without job security — CM Abdullah stated:“God willing, we will initiate regularization of daily wagers this year, and we will continue to support them.”
The announcement gives renewed hope to thousands of temporary workers in Jammu and Kashmir who have been seeking regular employment status and associated benefits. A high‑level committee headed by the Chief Secretary has previously been formed to examine the legal, financial and administrative aspects and to draft a structured framework for regularization.
During his address, the Chief Minister highlighted several key priorities of the Budget, including strengthening infrastructure, advancing rural development, and expanding support for agriculture, horticulture and dairy sectors. He also reiterated the government’s aim to fund social welfare schemes such as free LPG cylinders for beneficiaries from Jammu and Kashmir’s own resources.
Abdullah underscored the importance of balancing development with support for vulnerable sections of society, including daily wagers, as part of the government’s pro‑people agenda. He pushed back against criticism of the budget’s orientation, describing it as people‑centric and welfare‑oriented.
The announcement comes amid heightened expectations among daily wage workers, many of whom have long advocated for formal employment rights and social security. Officials say the move to begin the regularization process this year represents a major policy shift that could benefit thousands who have spent years in temporary positions with limited job protections.
While the exact timeline and eligibility criteria for regularization are yet to be finalized, the government’s commitment to initiating the process has been welcomed by worker unions and welfare groups.
