Elderly man arrested in Jalandhar rape case, family staged protest

In Jalandhar, Punjab, police filed a rape case against a 60-year-old man and arrested him. This angered the man’s family. On Friday, the family staged a protest at the Jalandhar Rural SSP office.

Rohit Kumar, son of the arrested elderly man, Prem Kumar, said that his father has kidney failure. He is undergoing treatment in the hospital. He has been bedridden for 10 months. Three days ago, the rural police picked up his father and put him in jail.

Family and well-wishers held protest 

Jalandhar city president of the Akali Dal, Iqbal Singh Dhindsa, also attended the protest and had an argument with police officers.

Leaders debated with police officers, and Akali Dal Jalandhar city president Iqbal Singh Dhindsa also attended the protest. He said that during the Akali Dal era, good officers were deployed in the field. Now the situation has become such that the most incompetent officers have been deployed in the field. They don’t even have the manners to talk to anyone who comes to the police station. All the good officers have been relegated to offices. During this, he also had a heated argument with police officers.

Akali Dal leader said, “The police don’t even know the girl.” Iqbal Singh Dhindsa said that Prem Kumar is elderly and was arrested in a 2021 case. He has diabetes and kidney problems. The Jalandhar police are openly harassing him. Four men lifted him in a sheet and took him away. Prem Singh was also unaware of the certificate. The police wrote in the FIR that Prem Singh had driven a car and the gang rape took place in that car.

Demanding the suspension of the SHO, Iqbal said that the police are harassing him unnecessarily. When we asked for the girl’s address, the police were unable to provide her address. The SHO of Patara police station provided this form. We have come to the SSP of the rural area. We will leave only when Prem Kumar is released. The SHO should be suspended and made to report to the police station.

DSP Rajeev Kumar said that the case was registered on May 21, 2025. Manjinder Singh had filed the case. A cross-examination was filed in this case. This case was filed by the girl. Five people were involved in this, including Prem’s name. Prem was picked up in this case. We are currently investigating the allegations made by the people. If the SHO has filed a wrong case, we will take action.
