New Delhi: The protest at Jamia Millia Islamia continued for the 14th day on Sunday, with students maintaining their sit-in on campus and refusing to withdraw their demand for the restoration of the university’s students’ union.
The protesters are seeking the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia University Students’ Union (JMIUSU), the withdrawal of disciplinary action against students and action against those accused of using force during the protests.
Security officials were deployed outside the campus gate as a precaution. The university has also decided to hold classes for all courses online amid the continuing agitation.
Students Press Three Key Demands
Student Anish Khan told IANS that the protest had grown beyond its original demand for the restoration of the students’ union. He said students were also seeking relief from disciplinary action taken after the October 17 protests.
According to Khan, several students faced suspensions, show-cause notices and restrictions on entering the campus. He said the protesters wanted these measures withdrawn and action taken against those accused of mistreating students.
Khan also called for the resignation of the university’s Proctor.
Another student, Farhan Israel, said the students’ union should be restored and demanded the resignations of both the university Proctor and the chief security advisor. He also called for all disciplinary action against students to be revoked.
Dispute at Gate No. 4, Online Classes Announced
A brief commotion broke out at Gate No. 4 after students and security officials argued over entry restrictions. Students who did not have hostel identification cards were denied entry, leading to a disagreement at the gate. The situation was brought under control shortly afterwards.
The protest has also drawn attention to slogans allegedly written on campus walls. Israel said it had not been established whether the slogans had been written by the students. He alleged that people associated with the RSS or ABVP could be behind them and claimed the issue was being used to divert attention from the protesters’ demands.
Israel also accused the university administration of trying to force an end to the demonstration through the deployment of security personnel. He said the students would continue their protest until their demands were addressed.
With the sit-in continuing, the university’s decision to shift classes for all courses online adds another development to the ongoing standoff between the administration and the protesting students.
