J&K: Govt bans heavy earth-moving machinery to curb illegal extraction

The government in Jammu and Kashmir has banned the use of heavy earth-moving machinery to curb illegal extraction of minerals across the region.

According to an order issued by the Directorate of Geology and Mining, authorities have been directed to strictly enforce rules and ensure that environmental regulations are not violated during mining activities. The directive specifically prohibits the use of heavy machines such as hydraulic excavators and similar equipment if their use breaches environmental clearance conditions or other legal provisions.

Officials said any machinery, vehicle, or equipment found involved in illegal mining or the transportation of minerals will be seized immediately. Legal action will also be initiated against those responsible under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 and other relevant rules.

District Mineral Officers and enforcement teams have been asked to intensify monitoring and submit daily action-taken reports to higher authorities. The government has also warned that any negligence in enforcement or reporting could lead to strict administrative action.

The order has come into effect immediately as part of the administration’s effort to check illegal mining and protect natural resources in the Union Territory.
