Srinagar, Feb 17 — After months of closures following the April 22, 2025, terror attack at Pahalgam’s Baisaran meadow, the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has reopened 14 major tourist destinations that had been shut as a precautionary measure. The reopening was ordered by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha after a comprehensive security review and consultations with law‑enforcement agencies. The move signals improved security conditions and aims to boost the tourism sector, which was severely hit by restrictions.
The Pahalgam attack, which killed 25 tourists and a local pony guide, led authorities to close nearly 48 key tourist spots across Jammu and Kashmir to assess safety and conduct security enhancements.
Key Attractions Now Open to Visitors
Of the 14 destinations reopened, 11 are located in the Kashmir Valley and three in the Jammu division. In the Valley, popular sites now accessible include:
Yousmarg and Doodhpathri in Budgam
Dandipora Park in Kokernag (Anantnag)
Peer Ki Gali, Dubjan and Padpawan in Shopian
Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden and Astanpora in Srinagar
Thajwas Glacier and Hung Park in Ganderbal
Wullar/Watlab area in Baramulla
In the Jammu division, the sites reopened include Devi Pindi in Reasi, Mahu Mangat in Ramban and Mughal Maidan in Kishtwar.
Several other destinations — Gurez, Athwatoo, Bangus in Kashmir, and Ramkund in Ramban — will be reopened “once snow clearance operations are completed,” officials said.
Tourism Sector Welcomes the Decision
Tourism stakeholders and local businesses have welcomed the reopening, saying it will help the region’s economy recover. The prolonged closure had dampened travel activity and bookings in hotels, tour operators and allied services. With these scenic locations now accessible again, industry players predict a rebound in tourist inflows as the spring season begins.
Authorities also highlighted that earlier phases of reopening have already seen some recovery in arrivals, and the latest move aims to further strengthen confidence among travellers.
Broader Efforts to Restore Normalcy
The reopening of these sites is part of an ongoing phased strategy following the Pahalgam incident, which severely impacted tourism in 2025. In past months, several parks and picnic spots in both Kashmir and Jammu regions were reopened after security assessments, and arrivals had shown signs of recovery.
Officials stressed that security arrangements remain robust, with deployment of police and other forces across key destinations, ensuring a safe environment for visitors while encouraging responsible travel.
