Kejriwal Questions AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar’s Detention, Alleges Delhi Police CCTV Vandalism

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday questioned the detention of party MLA Kuldeep Kumar and accused the Delhi Police of picking him up from his residence early in the morning and damaging CCTV cameras.

Kejriwal alleged that police personnel arrived at Kumar’s residence at around 4 a.m., damaged CCTV cameras and took away the digital video recorder (DVR). He questioned the whereabouts of the MLA and demanded an explanation from the Centre and Delhi Police.

In a post on X, Kejriwal alleged that Kumar was taken away without any information or explanation and said such action could not be tolerated.

Kejriwal seeks answers over MLA’s whereabouts

Kejriwal’s remarks came amid a political row over the killing of an MCD sanitation worker in Delhi and the AAP’s demand for justice and compensation for his family.

AAP leader Sanjeev Jha also alleged that people in plain clothes took Kumar from his residence around 4 a.m. and damaged the CCTV cameras before taking away the DVR.

Jha said he had been waiting outside the DCP Eastern Range office and attempting to meet the officer but had not received a response.

He questioned whether raising one’s voice for justice for a Dalit sanitation worker had become a crime and alleged that the MLA was being intimidated for speaking out on the issue.

AAP alleges pressure on sanitation worker’s family

The political confrontation intensified following the killing of 24-year-old Anil Kumar, an MCD sanitation worker who was allegedly stabbed to death while on duty in Delhi’s Kalyanpuri area on Sunday.

Police arrested a suspect in the case on Monday. The identity of the accused had not been publicly disclosed in the information provided.

The AAP has alleged that the Delhi Police was putting pressure on the deceased worker’s family to conduct the last rites despite their demand for justice and compensation.

AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged that police officials moved the victim’s body from the hospital to the family’s residence and subsequently pressured relatives to proceed with the cremation.

The party claimed that sanitation workers had been holding a protest following the killing and were demanding justice and Rs 1 crore compensation for the victim’s family.

AAP leaders alleged that some family members were also taken away by police early in the morning. The party questioned the alleged urgency to conduct the last rites without the family’s consent.

The AAP has maintained that the bereaved family should be allowed to decide when and how the last rites are performed and that its demands should be addressed before the cremation.
