Ludhiana’s Komalpreet Kaur Wins Gold at 2025 World Powerlifting Championship in Thailand

Ludhiana: 21-year-old Komalpreet Kaur, a resident of Ludhiana, brought glory to her country and family by winning the gold medal at the 2025 World Powerlifting Championship in Thailand. Weighing 63 kg, Komalpreet lifted 350 kg in the junior raw category to become the world champion.

Success after a tough struggle

Komalpreet’s journey was not easy. She did not even have access to the right diet for the sport. When she had to go to Thailand to participate in the World Championship, she had no money. Her family’s efforts went in vain. During this difficult time, former MLA Simarjit Singh Bains provided financial assistance of ₹50,000, thanks to which Komalpreet could travel to Thailand and return as a world champion.

World Champion in Just Three Years

Komalpreet started powerlifting in 2022. At that time, she weighed just 48 kg. She worked tirelessly and won one competition after another.

In 2023, she participated at the state level for the first time and won the gold medal.

So far, she has won four gold and three silver medals in seven state-level competitions.

In 2024, she became the national champion by winning the gold medal at the national championship.

In 2025, she created history by becoming the world champion.

Expertise in Powerlifting: Equipped and Raw

Komalpreet explained that there are two types of powerlifting – Equipped and Raw.

Equipped: In this category, weight is lifted with special equipment. Komalpreet has lifted up to 420 kg in this category so far.

Raw: In this category, weight is lifted in normal clothes. In this category, she became the world champion in Thailand by lifting 350 kg.

Previous sporting journey

At school level, Komalpreet Kaur participated in competitions like kickboxing, kho-kho and taekwondo. Later, while studying at Government College for Girls, she took up powerlifting after being inspired by weightlifting coach Sandeep Kaur.

Komalpreet’s victory is an inspiration not only for her but also for her family and society. She proved that with hard work, dedication and the right guidance, the impossible can be made possible.
