New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Power has announced plans to invest Rs 9.12 lakh crore to enhance the power transmission infrastructure in India by 2031-32, as stated by Minister of State for Power Shripad Yesso Naik in the Rajya Sabha.
The National Electricity Plan (Transmission) aims to add 1.91 lakh kilometers of transmission lines and 1,274 Giga Volt Ampere (GVA) of transformation capacity at voltage levels of 220 kV and above over the next decade, from 2022-23 to 2031-32. Additionally, the plan includes the development of 33.25 GW of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) bi-pole links.
The inter-regional transmission capacity is set to rise from the current 119 GW to 143 GW by 2026-27 and further to 168 GW by 2031-32. The plan also emphasizes the adoption of new technologies in transmission, cross-border interconnections, and the involvement of the private sector in transmission projects.
This Transmission Plan provides insights for electricity generators, equipment manufacturers, transmission service providers, and investors regarding growth opportunities in the transmission sector. It also outlines existing, ongoing, and planned interconnections with neighboring countries such as Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.
In a separate written response, the minister noted that there are currently 28 hydroelectric projects (HEPs) under construction, totaling 13,997.5 MW, along with five Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) amounting to 6,050 MW. Detailed project reports for 28 HEPs totaling 19,460 MW and four PSPs with a capacity of 4,100 MW have already been approved by the Central Electricity Authority.
Furthermore, he mentioned that 11 HEPs with a capacity of 8,036 MW and 44 PSPs totaling 60,050 MW are in the Survey & Investigation (S&I) phase. Currently, 29,200 MW of coal-based capacity is under construction, with 18,400 MW awarded and 47,240 MW under consideration. As of October 31, a total of 1,27,050 MW of renewable energy capacity is being implemented, while 89,690 MW is in the bidding process.
