Chandigarh: BJP’s Harpreet Kaur Babla has become the new mayor of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. She won the election by 2 votes after cross voting. The BJP candidate got 19 votes. Whereas Aam Aadmi Party and Congress alliance candidate Prem Lata got only 17 votes.

In the mayor election, BJP had the support of only 16 councillors. AAP had 13 votes, Congress had 6 votes and besides, it had 20 votes including one MP Manish Tiwari. AAP+Congress alliance had absolute majority. Despite this, their candidate lost.

It is clear from the result of the mayor election that 3 votes of the AAP-Congress alliance have gone in favor of BJP. This is a big setback for the Aam Aadmi Party before the Delhi elections. AAP’s Kuldeep Kumar Teeta was the mayor here in the last one year term.

After the results of the mayoral elections, the political battle between Congress and AAP, which are fighting against each other in Delhi, may intensify. However, BJP says that due to lack of development in Chandigarh, the councillors have voted in favour of BJP by listening to the voice of their conscience. Now voting is being held for the senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor.
