Sydney: On December 20, 2024, Sydney police announced that a task force aimed at dismantling organized crime syndicates has arrested 33 individuals and confiscated drugs valued at millions of US dollars.
Established in July, Task Force Lupin was created in response to rising tensions among organized crime groups from Asia operating in New South Wales (NSW).
In addition to the arrests, law enforcement seized over 10 million Australian dollars (approximately 6.2 million US dollars) worth of illegal drugs, 600,000 Australian dollars (around 372,000 US dollars) in cash, seven firearms, and more than 20 encrypted communication devices used by criminals.
Detectives executed over 35 search warrants, uncovering three clandestine methamphetamine labs—two located in western Sydney and one in the remote town of Mollyan, situated over 300 kilometers northwest of the city.
Detective Superintendent Peter Faux, who leads the organized crime squad, stated that the task force has made significant progress against organized crime in southwest Sydney. He emphasized that these arrests target dangerous criminals involved in violent activities, sending a clear message that such violence will not be tolerated on the streets.
In one notable incident from June, eight masked men forcibly entered a home in southwest Sydney, shot the occupant, and attempted to set the house on fire. Five individuals were arrested in connection with this incident, including a 25-year-old man linked to another shooting earlier that month.
Among those arrested recently is a 37-year-old man, charged with 19 offenses related to drug trafficking and firearm possession. Authorities allege that he played a significant role in one of the crime syndicates involved in drug distribution.
