Chandigarh: In a major crackdown on transnational organised crime, Punjab Police’s Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) has taken Karamveer Singh, a close associate of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, into custody at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in New Delhi following his deportation from Canada.

Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said Karamveer Singh had provided logistical support and a hideout to Anmol Bishnoi in the US. He was wanted in an FIR registered at the State Crime Police Station in SAS Nagar (Mohali) under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Arms Act and Passport Act.

A Look Out Circular (LOC) against him was initiated by AGTF Punjab on September 3.

    Karamveer Singh Has Criminal History

According to the police, Karamveer Singh has a criminal history involving cases related to murder, attempt to murder, robbery, extortion, offences under the Arms Act and other criminal activities.

Further investigation is underway to uncover his wider criminal network and activities.

Punjab Police has said it remains committed to dismantling gangster networks and ensuring that wanted criminals operating from different countries are brought to justice.

Punjab Police Earlier Secured Extradition From Moldova

Last week, the AGTF and the Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC), with assistance from Central agencies, secured the extradition of fugitive criminal Amritpal Singh, alias Amrit Dalam, a key operative of the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang, from Moldova.

Amritpal Singh is wanted in multiple cases involving murder, attempt to murder, offences under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), the Arms Act and narcotic offences.

He was detained by Moldovan authorities on February 24 while attempting to cross the Otaci state border towards Ukraine. Following his detention, the extradition process was initiated through OFTEC Punjab.

The Court of Chisinau granted his extradition to India on May 26. His appeal against the extradition order was rejected by the Court of Appeal Centru on July 16, making the extradition order final.

A Punjab Police team took Amritpal Singh into custody from Chisinau Airport in Moldova, and he arrived at IGI Airport on September 12.

The DGP had described it as the first-ever extradition secured by Punjab Police from a European country, calling it a significant milestone in the fight against organised crime.

The operation marked the successful culmination of “Operation Eastern Reach”, a six-month-long intelligence-led international manhunt involving sustained surveillance, strategic intelligence gathering and coordination with national and international agencies.
