Lok Sabha Adjourned Amid Opposition Protests After House Marks Quit India Movement Anniversary

New Delhi: Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned till noon on Friday after persistent protests by Opposition members disrupted the Question Hour, shortly after the House paid tribute to the freedom fighters of the 1942 Quit India Movement.

At the start of the day’s proceedings, the House observed a minute’s silence to honour the sacrifices of freedom fighters associated with the historic Bharat Chhodo Andolan, led by Mahatma Gandhi. Members also pledged to uphold the ideals and values of the country’s freedom struggle.

Opposition protests disrupt Question Hour

Soon after the tribute, Opposition members raised slogans and demanded a discussion on various issues, including the alleged police excesses during the recent protests in Delhi.

Despite repeated appeals by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, the Opposition members continued their protests, leading to repeated disruptions during the Question Hour.

Speaker invokes Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals

Appealing for order, Speaker Om Birla urged members to follow Mahatma Gandhi’s path of resolving differences through dialogue instead of disrupting parliamentary proceedings.

He said Gandhi’s ideals continue to inspire not only India but the entire world and requested the protesting MPs to allow the House to function.

“I plead before you to not disrupt the crucial Question Hour and let the House function,” the Speaker said before adjourning the House till noon as the uproar continued.

House remembers Quit India Movement

Earlier, Om Birla informed the House that the nation will observe the 84th anniversary of the Quit India Movement on August 9.

Recalling the historic movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi in 1942 with the “Do or Die” call, the Speaker said it united the country against British rule and played a decisive role in India’s freedom struggle.

He urged members to draw inspiration from the sacrifices of the freedom fighters and reaffirm their commitment to the principles of democracy and national service.
