Brazil Election: Lula Defeats Trump Ally Flavio Bolsonaro to Secure Historic Fourth Term

Brasilia: Brazil’s incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has defeated right-wing leader Flavio Bolsonaro to secure a historic fourth term, extending his leadership of Latin America’s largest democracy after a closely contested presidential election.

Lula received 51.75 per cent of the votes, compared with 48.25 per cent for Bolsonaro in Sunday’s election. The result marks a significant victory for the veteran leader and interrupts a wider rightward political shift seen in several South American countries, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru.

Bolsonaro, who is considered an ally of US President Donald Trump, had challenged Lula in a closely fought contest that placed democracy, national sovereignty and Brazil’s political direction at the centre of the campaign.

Lula Pledges to Safeguard Democracy and National Sovereignty

Addressing supporters after his victory, Lula said his campaign had persuaded voters that participating in the election was essential to protecting democracy.

He also criticised foreign intervention through digital platforms and stressed that Brazil would not be treated as another country’s backyard.

“We will change the way we run this country, we will make people participate more in the decision-making process,” Lula said, outlining his pledge to involve citizens more directly in governance.

Celebrations broke out among his supporters following the result. Edinho Silva, head of Lula’s Workers’ Party, described the victory on social media as a historic turning point for democracy.

Voting Extension Triggers Dispute Between Supporters

Sunday’s polling was marked by controversy after voting hours were extended by two hours in some areas following concerns about access to polling stations.

Lula had argued that buses had been taken off the roads in several cities, preventing some voters from reaching polling stations. Supporters of the incumbent accused Bolsonaro’s camp of trying to benefit from reduced transport availability.

Bolsonaro, however, had also called for voting to be extended in certain areas following heavy rainfall.

The decision led to arguments between supporters of both candidates. Lula’s backers said the extension was necessary to ensure everyone had the opportunity to vote, while some Bolsonaro supporters criticised the move.

Lula Faces Economic and Political Challenges in Fourth Term

Despite his victory, Lula’s next term is expected to bring considerable challenges. Nearly half of the voters backed Bolsonaro, highlighting the deep political divisions within the country.

Lula will also face a Congress dominated by the right, which could make it difficult to advance his legislative agenda. Economic concerns remain another major challenge, with growth expected to slow.

The government is also under pressure to tackle widespread insecurity linked to criminal factions operating in working-class neighbourhoods.

During the campaign, Lula placed national sovereignty at the forefront of his message amid commercial and diplomatic pressure from the United States under Trump. He urged voters to choose a country where its national flag would be respected and accused Bolsonaro of wanting to govern under the American flag.

Lula’s fourth term will test his ability to bridge Brazil’s political divide while addressing economic pressures, public security and relations with the United States.
