Majithia arrives in Chandigarh court, hearing in police clash case today

Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikramjit Singh Majithia arrived at the district court today in connection with the clash with Chandigarh police. His appearance was scheduled for Monday, but he did not appear. His lawyer, Rajesh Kumar Rai, filed an application on his behalf, citing an important party meeting. The court granted him a one-day exemption and directed him to appear on Tuesday at all costs. The next hearing in the case will be on March 5.

Meanwhile, the High Court has quashed the FIR registered against former cabinet ministers Daljit Singh Cheema and Maheshinder Singh Grewal. Now, the case will proceed only against Majithia and other accused.

Taking aim at the Punjab government
After arriving in court, Majithia attacked the Punjab government. He said that the Punjab Assembly was in session when the Chandigarh police registered the case, and the incident occurred within the assembly premises. He alleged that this action was taken under pressure from the Punjab government.

Majithia said that the High Court has dismissed the cases against two accused, and a decision will be delivered soon in the remaining cases. He also accused the Chief Minister of acting under pressure from Delhi.

Clashes occurred during the 2021 protest
According to police, in 2021, several Akali Dal leaders were going to surround the Chief Minister’s residence in Chandigarh over the issues of inflation and the 1984 riots. The UT Police tried to stop them by erecting barricades. It is alleged that the protesters broke the barricades, violated government orders, and obstructed police duty.

Some policemen were injured during the clash. The Sector 3 police station filed a charge sheet in this case. After the High Court lifted the one-and-a-half-year-old stay, the case will now be expedited in the district court.
