Jalandhar: Senior journalist and Punjabi writer Mehar Malik, 70, was honoured with a State Award by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann during the state-level Independence Day function in Ferozepur on August 15.
Malik was recognised for his decades-long contribution to Punjabi journalism, literature and the promotion of the Punjabi language. He has been associated with various newspapers in Punjab since 1975 and continues to write for several Punjabi publications.
Seven Punjabi Books Highlight Social Issues
Over the years, Malik has authored seven books in Punjabi, using his writing to highlight sensitive social issues and give voice to people and communities whose struggles often remain overlooked.
A major focus of his literary work has been the challenges faced by women. His writings have highlighted the plight of women abandoned by NRI husbands after marriage, who are often left to live lives resembling widowhood despite their husbands being alive.
His books have also addressed issues such as dowry, female foeticide and social inequalities, drawing attention to practices that continue to affect families and communities.
His published works include Jionde Jee Randeppa (2016), Channan Laagi (2018), Bholi Da Karva Chauth (2019), Vesva (2021), Panjeban (2023) and Main Kaha Si Na… (2025). More books are currently in the pipeline.
Writer Preserves Traditional Punjabi Vocabulary
A distinctive feature of Malik’s writing is his effort to preserve traditional Punjabi words, expressions and cultural references that are gradually disappearing from everyday usage.
His works reflect Punjab’s rural culture, heritage and linguistic traditions, while encouraging readers to remain connected with their mother tongue and roots.
During the award ceremony, Malik also presented copies of his books to Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.
Earlier Honoured By Jalandhar Administration
The Jalandhar administration had earlier honoured Malik with a district-level award on January 26, 2025, for his contribution to the media sector.
Expressing gratitude to Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann for recognising his work, Malik stressed the importance of keeping younger generations connected with Punjabi language, culture and rural heritage.
