Sarabjit Samana became the new mayor of Mohali: MLA Kulwant Singh’s son; A big setback for AAP leader Sunny Ahluwalia

Mohali Municipal Corporation got a new mayor on Tuesday. Sarabjit Singh Samana, the son of MLA Kulwant Singh, was elected as mayor. Sarabjit Singh was seated in the chair after being given a treat by party president Aman Arora, MLA Kulwant Singh, and Dr. Sunny Ahluwalia.

Samana becoming mayor came as a shock to Sunny Ahluwalia. He had made full preparations for it. But at the last moment, the MLA’s son was made mayor.

Earlier, the Congress had boycotted the election. Along with this, a councillor from the Shiromani Akali Dal also walked out.

During the meeting, special arrangements were made for security and confidentiality. All councillors had to keep their mobile phones outside the municipal building gates. Only after registering their entry were they allowed to enter the assembly inside.

Son of MLA among the names: Several names are being discussed in the Aam Aadmi Party for the mayoral post. Among them, the son of Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh and councillor Sarabjit Singh Samana is considered the strongest contender. He won his election from Ward-42 by a margin of 458 votes.
Second and fourth term councillors in the race: Dr. Sunny Ahluwalia, chairman of the Water Supply and Sewerage Board, is in the race. He is associated with the party’s senior leaders. He won his election from Ward-6 by a margin of 269 votes. Additionally, Gurmeet Kaur, both husband and wife becoming councillors for the second time, is also in the mayoral race. She became a councillor by winning from Ward-3 by a margin of 182 votes. Sukhdev Singh Patwari is the fourth, who has won his election for the fourth time. He became a councillor from Ward-34.

The minister may announce the names: Party sources say that the final decision will be made keeping in mind women’s representation, seniority, and regional balance. It is likely that Punjab’s Minister of Industry and Commerce, Aman Arora, will reach Mohali and announce the names of the candidates. Congress bets on Nipendra Singh Rangi: On the other hand, Congress has clarified its strategy a day before the election. The party has elected Nipendra Singh Rangi as the leader of the Congress councillor group. He won the election from Ward-18 with a margin of 123 votes. Rangi claimed that the 12 Congress councillors are united and the party will contest the election in the municipal council with strength.

Curiosity Remains Even After Majority

The Aam Aadmi Party has a majority in the Municipal Corporation, so its control over the mayoral position is almost considered certain. However, discussions within the party regarding the candidate’s name have made the election interesting. Now, everyone’s attention is focused on the meeting to be held today and the political decisions that may occur in the final moments.

Results Came on May 29

It is to be noted that the Mohali Municipal Corporation elections were held on May 26, and the results were announced on May 29, 2026. There are a total of 50 councilors in the Mohali Municipal Corporation. To have a majority here, 26 votes are needed. With the votes of 50 elected councilors and 1 local MLA combined, the total votes in the house come to 51.

This time, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won 27 seats, Congress (INC) won 12 seats, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) won 4 seats, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 3 seats, and Independents won 4 seats. The MLA is from AAP, bringing their total number of votes to 28.

Last time, Congress became mayor, but did not contest this time.

Earlier, after the 2021 elections, Amarjit Singh Jiti Sidhu of Congress became the mayor of Mohali. He is the brother of former Punjab minister Balbir Singh Sidhu. He did not contest the election this time. However, Advocate Kanwarbir Singh Ruby Sidhu (son of Balbir Singh Sidhu) from Amarjit Singh Jiti Sidhu’s family contested from Ward Number 10 on a Congress ticket. He lost the election.
