Mohali Woman Dies After Self-Immolation Outside Police Station; Rape Allegation Under Probe

A young woman, who set herself on fire outside the Baltana police station in Zirakpur, died during treatment at PGI Chandigarh. The woman was a resident of Panchkula. She was demanding police action in a case of rape and cheating for millions of rupees, in which she was lured with the promise of marriage.

The woman (28) was in a relationship with a young man. The accused had demanded around 5 lakh rupees from her under the pretext of opening a salon. He first took 2 lakh rupees in cash from the woman and then took the remaining amount by getting a loan in her name. As disputes over money and installments increased, an argument broke out between the two. The woman filed a complaint with the police, alleging that he had raped her and also cheated her out of money.

However, the police filed a case against the man and arrested him. But the woman, accusing the police of not taking any further action, set herself on fire.

The young man took her to a private hotel and raped her

The woman had alleged that the accused took her to a private hotel in Baltana area and raped her. After a complaint was registered in this regard, the matter was transferred from Panchkula police to Baltana outpost. The police have registered a case and arrested the accused.

On April 28, a fire was set outside the police outpost.

The victim alleged that the police was being lax in this matter and her complaint was not being acted upon seriously. It is being told that on April 28, the girl again reached the Baltana outpost. Reportedly hurt by not being heard and being thrown out of the checkpoint, he set himself on fire by pouring petrol on himself outside the checkpoint.

Died during treatment

The seriously burned young woman was first referred to a local hospital and later to PGI Chandigarh. Here, she died during treatment on Saturday morning. At PGI, video statements of the young woman were also recorded in the presence of the SDM.

Report summoned from Mohali DC and SSP

After this incident, the Punjab State Women’s Commission took suo motu cognizance and has summoned a report from the DC and SSP of Mohali. Meanwhile, the Balatana police station in-charge and the investigation officer have been suspended, and a departmental inquiry has been initiated. Following the young woman’s death, serious questions have been raised about the functioning of the police.
