Mumbai Battered by Heavy Rain; IMD Issues Orange Alert as Mulund, Santacruz Worst Hit

Mumbai: Mumbai witnessed relentless rainfall over the past 24 hours, causing waterlogging and disrupting normal life across several parts of the city. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the eastern suburbs recorded the highest rainfall, with Mulund, Powai and Santacruz emerging among the worst-affected areas.

Mulund, Santacruz and Powai Receive Highest Rainfall

The BMC said Mitha Municipal School in Mulund recorded the highest rainfall at 218.6 mm, followed by SWM Santacruz Workshop (216 mm) and Narialwadi School in Santacruz (214.4 mm). Paspoli Municipal School in Powai received 208.4 mm, highlighting the intensity of the downpour across Mumbai’s suburbs.

IMD Issues Orange Alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall along with the possibility of waterlogging, poor visibility and traffic disruptions. A Red Alert has also been issued for Palghar, where schools and colleges have been closed due to the forecast of extremely heavy rain.

Monsoon Activity Expected to Intensify

The IMD said a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the northwest Bay of Bengal around July 3, which could further strengthen the southwest monsoon. Mumbai and the Konkan region are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next few days, prompting authorities to remain on high alert.
