Yangon: Myanmar’s National Defence and Security Council (NDSC) announced the establishment of a new union government and a State Security and Peace Commission, according to the state-owned Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV).
The new union government is headed by U Nyo Saw as Prime Minister, while the State Security and Peace Commission is chaired by Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, reported Xinhua News Agency citing the official announcement.
Additionally, the NDSC decided to revoke the previous order that transferred sovereign power to the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services.
Zaw Min Tun, spokesperson for Myanmar’s State Administration Council, stated Thursday that the NDSC had resolved to lift the ongoing state of emergency, paving the way for upcoming general elections.
In February 2021, Myanmar’s then-Acting President U Myint Swe declared a one-year state of emergency, transferring sovereign authority to the Commander-in-Chief. Subsequently, Min Aung Hlaing led the formation of the State Administration Council. The NDSC had extended this emergency repeatedly in six-month intervals until July 31 this year.
Meanwhile, Myanmar is actively pushing for digital transformation under its Myanmar Digital Economy Roadmap 2030, according to the government newspaper Myanma Alinn dated July 26.
A recent meeting of the Digital Economy Development Committee (DEDC) held at the Ministry of Commerce in Nay Pyi Taw reviewed progress and outlined priorities for the coming years. Union Minister for Transport and Communications, General Mya Tun Oo, emphasized that rapid digital growth is crucial for developing countries to advance, citing data from the World Economic Forum that shows the digital economy now accounts for at least 15% of global GDP and is projected to exceed 25% by 2030. He urged all sectors in Myanmar to coordinate efforts to build a digital future.
The DEDC, tasked with leading the nation’s digital transformation, launched the Myanmar Digital Economy Roadmap 2030 in December last year. The plan encompasses a strategic vision, six core objectives, nine priority sectors, nine strategic pillars, 22 goals, and 77 detailed action plans to be executed over the next five years.
