Lucknow: The All India Muslim Women Personal Law Board has voiced its support for the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Bill in Parliament and has called on the government to promote transparency in the operations of the Waqf board while ensuring women’s rights.

Shaista Amber, President of the All India Muslim Women Personal Law Board, stated that previous governments and religious leaders should have taken the actions that the current government has now pursued. “Positive work must be done. Those who donate to the Waqf do so with the intention that their contributions will benefit the poor… But this has not been happening. While not all Waqf lands were misused, the Waqf board has not operated honestly or fulfilled its responsibilities. We expect and urge the government to ensure that the Waqf lands are utilized transparently for the underprivileged,” Amber told ANI.

She emphasized the need to reclaim encroached Waqf lands and urged the BJP government to grant rights to women and ensure greater transparency in the Waqf board’s operations. “What other parties have done until now—were they asleep? I request the current government to take action to free the illegally encroached Waqf properties; an investigation must be conducted, and action taken against those responsible,” she added.

Amber also suggested that housing should be constructed on Waqf property specifically for divorced women in the Muslim community. She recalled meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2017 to demand the liberation of Waqf properties from illegal occupation.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, was passed by Parliament earlier this week after extensive debates in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The bill faced opposition from parties within the INDIA bloc.
