New Delhi: The Bar Council of India (BCI) has identified the distribution of a fraudulent document that is falsely attributed to the Council. Titled “Official Notification- Mandatory Minimum Fee Structure for Advocates in India,” and dated February 15, 2025, this document claims to introduce a mandatory minimum fee structure for advocates, set to take effect on March 1, 2025.

In a press release, the BCI stated that this document is designed to mislead the public and members of the legal profession by falsely presenting itself as an official directive. This act of forgery involves creating a false document with the intent to inflict damage, support a false claim, or commit fraud.

The document lacks an official signature, appropriate reference numbers, and procedural documentation. Its explicit note stating “No Signature Required” appears to be a deliberate attempt to evade verification and authentication, a common tactic in forging documents.

Additionally, the document misuses the name and address of the Bar Council of India to falsely suggest legitimacy. This intentional misrepresentation aims to deceive both the public and the legal community into thinking that the Bar Council has issued an official statement. The supposed mandatory minimum fee for advocates is intended to confuse and mislead.

The motive behind this forgery seems to be to deceive and disseminate misinformation, potentially causing significant reputational harm to the Bar Council while misleading the legal fraternity and the public. The circulation of such a document is a severe offense.

The Bar Council of India strongly condemns the creation and distribution of this false document. The Council assures both the legal community and the public that immediate legal action will be taken against those responsible for this act. Spreading such false and misleading information is a serious crime and will face strict legal repercussions.
