New Delhi: The BJP leaders strongly condemned the act and declared their unwillingness to tolerate such disrespect. Virendra Sachdeva expressed his anger over the incident, which took place on Republic Day, a day that celebrates India’s Constitution. He criticized the AAP-led Punjab government for its silence, particularly as the statue of Dr. Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution, was attacked in front of the Kotwali police station. Sachdeva expressed his disappointment with the lack of action from both the police and the government.
Yogendra Chandolia also voiced his disapproval, calling on Kejriwal to dissolve his government in Punjab if he fails to address the situation. Dushyant Kumar Gautam suggested that the incident was part of an effort to distance Kejriwal’s government from the Dalit community, and he vowed that the BJP would not tolerate such acts of disrespect against their leaders and communities.
The vandalism occurred on January 26, when Akashdeep Singh, reportedly from the Scheduled Caste community, defaced the statue on Heritage Street near the Golden Temple. A viral video of the incident led to Singh’s swift arrest. According to the police, Singh used a hammer to damage the statue and set fire to a stone-carved book symbolizing the Indian Constitution placed near it. The exact motive behind the act is still under investigation.
Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar confirmed that an FIR had been filed, and an investigation is underway to understand the full extent and motivations behind the vandalism. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from political leaders and the public alike, with many expressing outrage over the disrespect shown to Dr. Ambedkar.
