Jammu and Kashmir: In Sopore, Jammu and Kashmir, four drug peddlers have been detained, with narcotics recovered from them, police confirmed on Wednesday. The arrests followed targeted operations based on specific information received from the public, leading to the seizure of substances such as codeine-based syrup and a brown sugar-like material.
Three separate FIRs have been filed under the relevant sections of the NDPS Act. In the first case at Adipora Crossing, Rameez Ahmad Mir, of Adipora Sopore, was apprehended with 13 bottles of codeine-like liquid with tampered labels. The second arrest involved Waseem Ahmad Mir, also from Adipora Sopore, caught at Malpora-Warpora Crossing while attempting to escape; a quantity of the brown sugar-like substance was recovered from him.
In another case at Chijhama Crossing, two residents of Marzipora — Javid Ahmad Bhat and Rayees Ahmad Baba — were arrested while transporting codeine-based drugs in a truck (JK05E-4845), which was also seized by authorities.
These actions are part of Sopore Police’s ongoing effort to combat the drug menace threatening the youth. SSP Sopore emphasized the police’s firm stance against drug trafficking, stating that those involved will face strict legal consequences. He also urged the public to continue reporting suspicious activities to help create a safer, drug-free environment for the community.
The police and security agencies have intensified their campaign against drug traffickers in Jammu and Kashmir, especially since intelligence suggests that proceeds from drug trade and hawala activities are often used to fund terrorist activities in the region. As a result, anti-drug operations are now integrated with counter-terrorism efforts.
