Surat: Four contractual workers tragically lost their lives in a fire at the ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) plant in Hazira, Surat, on the evening of January 1. The incident occurred when burning coal unexpectedly spilled, igniting a fire in one area of the facility. The victims were on a lift at the time of the accident.

Surat’s Commissioner of Police, Anupam Singh Gehlot, reported that an investigation is underway, led by police and factory inspectors. As of now, no accidental death report has been filed. Three of the deceased have been taken to a civil hospital for post-mortem examinations, while the fourth body remains unconfirmed.

An AM/NS India spokesperson expressed sorrow over the incident, which they attributed to equipment failure at the plant’s Corex unit during its restart after a shutdown. The workers were performing maintenance on a nearby lift when the tragedy occurred. One other worker suffered minor injuries and is recovering after treatment at the plant’s on-site hospital.

The company activated emergency protocols immediately and secured the affected area for safety. They are conducting an internal investigation to identify the cause of the accident and are cooperating with authorities. The spokesperson also emphasized their commitment to assisting the families of the deceased and injured workers.

This incident underscores the critical need for rigorous safety measures in high-risk industrial settings like steel plants, and both the authorities and the company are focused on preventing similar events in the future.
